Autonomic testing
Autonomic testing at Amsterdam Brain Center
Autonomic testing at Amsterdam Brain Center focuses on one essential question:
Is the brain receiving the necessary fuel to function and recover properly?

Why autonomic testing at Amsterdam Brain Center?
For the brain to function properly and to recover, it must continuously receive sufficient oxygen and glucose through the bloodstream. This depends on proper regulation of blood pressure, circulation and autonomic balance. After a concussion, traumatic brain injury or prolonged neurological stress, this regulation may become disrupted. Even when structural damage is no longer visible, the brain may still not receive optimal metabolic support.
Recovery is therefore not solely dependent on structural healing of the brain. The brain must also be adequately supported by the body’s regulatory systems.
If blood pressure regulation or vascular control is impaired, the delivery of oxygen and glucose may be insufficient, particularly during changes in posture or activity. When this occurs, symptoms may persist or recovery may stagnate. Patients may experience fatigue, dizziness, cognitive slowing or reduced tolerance for physical or mental exertion.
Autonomic testing at Amsterdam Brain Center is aimed at determining whether the brain is sufficiently supplied with the necessary fuel for recovery and performance. By assessing autonomic regulation, we evaluate whether impaired physiological support may be limiting neurological improvement.
“Autonomic testing is a series of tests to determine whether your brain is receiving all the nutrients it needs to recover and perform.”

What do we examine?
Our autonomic testing consists of measurements that provide insight into how effectively the body regulates circulation and supports the brain.
This may include:
- Blood pressure measurements under different physiological conditions
- Assessment of cerebral perfusion
- Pupillary response testing
- Retinal vascular evaluation
- Postural testing when indicated
These measurements allow us to determine whether the brain is receiving sufficient blood flow and metabolic support, both at rest and during physiological stress.
“After autonomous testing, we can assess whether the conditions for the brain are sufficient for it to recover and function.”

A functional approach
At Amsterdam Brain Center, autonomic testing is part of a broader functional neurological evaluation. We assess not only whether the brain itself is functioning, but also whether the body is adequately supporting it.
If autonomic regulation is insufficient, treatment can be directed toward improving physiological stability and optimizing the metabolic environment necessary for recovery.
Understanding whether the brain is properly fueled is an essential step in determining the most effective path toward neurological improvement.
