Functional neurology

What is functional neurology?

On this page, we tell you what functional neurology is, the philosophy behind it , how it works and what conditions functional neurology can help with.

What is functional neurology

Functional neurology is a specialized type of care focused entirely on the brain and nervous system. Therapy is used in various forms of Noncongenital Brain Injury (NBI) or disorders of the nervous system (neurological disorders). Within functional neurology, the neuroplasticity of the brain is central. This is the ability of nerve cells to repair and make new connections.

Through the use of specific, non-invasive techniques, nerve cells are rehabilitated allowing brain functions to recover.

The philosophy behind functional neurology

The essence of functional neurology is to stimulate our brain’s ability to adapt. Our brain naturally has this ability, with functional neurology we take advantage of this natural resilience of the brain.

No doubt you know the saying “There are several roads to Rome.” By this is meant that there are different ways to do something, to achieve the goal.

Even our brain often has multiple ways of performing a function. If, for some reason, there is no way to perform that function through a particular avenue, there is often another avenue by which it can still be done.

This can be done by strengthening existing connections between nerve cells or by creating new ones. This restores communication between nerve cells or brain regions, returning functionality.

The total FNE takes place at our practice and lasts about 1.5 hours. The results provide a complete picture of any abnormal brain function and the brain regions involved.

How does functional neurology work

We already mentioned the comparison about multiple roads to Rome. In the Netherlands, for example, you can take both the A1 and A2 from Amsterdam to Utrecht. So when the A1 is blocked, just take the A2.
With functional neurology, we help nerve cells find alternative pathways to exercise their functionality. We do this with very specific exercises, training and treatments. We have dozens of different treatment options, all focused on stimulation of a particular group of nerve cells or brain region.

For example, we can improve the metabolism of brain cells by simulating it with light (photobiomodulation). This prompts brain cells to become more active. Through Saccadometry, we can affect the coordination between your eyes and your brain, which can make looking much less tiring for you.

In this way, our functional neurology center has dozens of different therapies, all of which can be used specifically to restore brain function. When treating disorders, we employ various therapies to stimulate the brain in multiple ways. This is intense, but also very powerful.

What conditions can functional neurology help with

Functional neurology is particularly effective in noncongenital brain injuries. So with disruptions or damage to the brain and nervous system that you have suffered somewhere during your life. These may be symptoms you are left with after an accident in which you suffered a concussion or whiplash. We therefore see in the Amsterdam Brain Center many people who are still struggling with the consequences of an accident after years.

We also treat people with symptoms such as migraines, dizziness or focusing problems. Regardless of how long these have been present. Depending on the complaint and underlying cause, the goal of therapy is complete recovery or reduction of symptoms/improvement of daily functioning. So for some, full recovery is possible. While someone else has already been greatly helped in reducing symptoms.

Functional neurology can be helpful with any condition or complaint where we can stimulate the brain to make new connections or use other existing connections. This can be done by strengthening existing connections between nerve cells or by creating new ones. This restores communication between nerve cells or brain regions, returning functionality.
